Target Audience Survey Results

After creating my survey, I then had difficulty with ensuring the correct audience would answer my survey. Whilst I could have sent the survey to friends as well as distributing it on social media sites, it would have been likely that the majority of my respondents would have been people around a similar age to me, therefore meaning that I would have to alter my previous planning and research. Whilst I initially wanted to target a youth audience, I altered my audience demographic to appeal to an older audience because I realised that every regional magazine I have researched is aimed at an older audience. Changing the age range of my audience also ensures that I am following typical conventions for this genre.

To overcome the issue I had with distributing my survey, my teacher helpfully offered to email my survey to the school staff, in order to ensure that the correct audience would be responding to my survey. As a result of this (also supported by the screenshot featured below) the majority of my respondents were 40+, therefore fitting my new audience demographic successfully.

As my results from this question show, a larger amount of females than males answered my survey, therefore demonstrating that my results are more female opinionated.

Because I altered my primary target audience from a youthful demographic to a significantly older audience to follow genre conventions, this result proves to be successful in ensuring that I can apply my previous research and planning to accommodate to this audience.

As the majority of responders said they occasionally read regional magazines, this suggests that I should create my regional magazine on a monthly basis. This would also ensure that I am following typical genre conventions.

As the majority of my responders said they would be willing to spend in-between £3-£4 on a regional magazine, this is a clear indicator on whereabouts I should price my magazine (as well as following genre conventions).

With 'Cornish Life' being the most popular result for my possible title choice, choosing this title would ensure that I am meeting the needs of the majority of my responders. It also follows genre conventions in that the title informs the audience on which region is being featured.

This result gives me more of an understanding on the type of content I should include in my regional magazine, as the majority of my respondents have stated that they would prefer a regional magazine with a seasonal theme.

This result shows that my audience would prefer to see 3 images on my contents page as opposed to any of the other numbers offered on my survey. This therefore tells me that I should include 3 images on my regional magazine, in order to appeal to the correct target audience and meet their needs.

As seen in the screenshot above, almost half of my responders have said that they would prefer to see 5 images in a regional double page spread, which gives me a better understanding on what my audience will expect to see, therefore meaning that I can begin to consider the layout and structure of my double page spread. Whilst having this many images on a regional double page spread may not follow genre conventions, it is meeting the needs of my audience.

The two most popular choices for this question were 'blue and white' and the 'other' option, which offers a range of different responses. This therefore means that I have a range of popular options I can consider, also depending on the content of the responses I received.

Whilst 'gold and black' and 'black and white' was mentioned in my responses separately by two different people, this demonstrates that 'blue and white' was the most popular response to this question.

This answer shows how much text the audience would want to see on my regional double page spread, therefore allowing me to consider how detailed and lengthy I need my article to be. This answer also suggests that as my article text will be filling one page on my double page spread, the other page needs to display either one main image or a variation of images relating to the content of my article.

Overall, the results from my survey have given me a clear indicator on what kind of colours and content I need to include in my regional magazine, as well as what kind of demographic I should be targeting. Whilst some of my results indicate that I may not be following genre conventions consistently, I did want to apply the results from my survey in my work as accurately as I can, as they show what my target audience is wanting.

  1. Some great results Zoe.
Be careful with your comments - just because more females answered doesn't meant you must target females - it means that your results will reflect a female opinion more!!
Also, you need to take genre conventions into account too so you can go against answers if you believe it follows conventions more successfully.
