Target Audience Profile

As a part of my planning for my regional magazine, I will need to understand more about my audience and how I can appeal to them. This will involve researching demographics and psychographics in order for me to learn who I am creating my magazine for.

My primary target audience would be males and females living in Cornwall, aged between 18-30, categorised in the social classes B-C2. I want to aim towards an audience belonging to social classes in the middle of the spectrum, as aiming for the highest social class will be difficult for me to achieve, and aiming for the lower social classes will make the quality of my work not as professional as I could make it. I have selected this age range because it relates to my age, and therefore I have a better understanding on the expectations and standards required for this age category, in comparison to an older or younger primary target audience. My magazine will have a positive representation of my featured region in order to appeal to the audience and encourage them to purchase my magazine.

My secondary audience would be older males and females living outside of Cornwall, but with an interest in the region. Their age range would most likely be anyone older than 30 years old, regardless of gender. The social class status remains the same, as making the social classes different for my primary and secondary target audience would require changing my content and layout, therefore meaning that my regional magazine would have to target two separate audiences who are expecting different content.

In terms of psychographics, I studied a range of theories that focus on behaviour and attitudes. One of these theories is the Young and Rubican theory, which focuses on the different personalities of people, and their different types of lifestyles.

In terms of applying this theory to my own audience research, my primary audience would be explorers, as they are young minded and are willing to seek out and discover new places and experiences. Their biggest interest is discovery, and they enjoy finding new places to explore.

My secondary primary audience would possibly be in the resigned category, because they are older males and females with an interest in the Cornish region, and whilst they aren't motivated by the need for discovery like my primary target audience is, they enjoy reading about their region and appreciate nostalgia from Cornish locations.

Vals' (Values and Lifestyles) Theory is relevant to psychographics for a target audience because it discusses social groupings and characteristics.

In terms of applying this theory to my own psychographics, my primary target audience would be Innovators, because they are interested in seeking new and different things. My secondary target audience would be traditionalists, because they prefer traditional values that bring them nostalgia.

  1. This is a great profile Zoe - well done. My only concern is whether you are looking at too young an audience for a typical regional magazine? Normally the TA is 30 and above.
